Introduction
Token based security is trending everywhere in today’s security architecture. There are different token providers out there, but the one people are more familiar with is the JWT token.
The token identifies a user. For example, your ID card could be used as a token. It identifies who you claim to be. The Id card would contain information like:

The JSON Web Token
The JSON Web Token contains some header information, a signature, and the token’s claims. In plain

The token header is used to specify some other things like signature algorithm, expiration date, the name of the issuer, and a few other attributes.

After creating the JwtAuthHandler class, add the JWTManager class that just creates the token when ever a user is signing in and returns the token as the response.

The next thing i am going to show you is creating a class that decodes the token from the request header and read the information like the user id and the name and uses the information to get data from the database.

In the example above we create a method that gets the userid from the decoded token and note, the token secret is also stored in the web.config file in <appSettings> section.
We can use now authorize a web API controller class and methods. For example, any request made to the user profile has to be authorized.

EntityFramework is used to query the user table by the userid gotten from the decoded token and returned the response.
Note: In the WebApiConfig class, you have to register the message handler to use the JWTAuthHandler class.

The IsAuthenticated() method checks if the token is found in the cookie. The IsTokenValid() method decodes the token and checks if the token has expired. These are just the right steps for validating a token on the client side.
Adding the filter on the Action Method
The “api/v1/profile” is a protected resource. That means you will need to provide the token for authorization. With the custom attribute class, you don’t need to start writing tedious and boring codes, all you need to do is this ↓

And that’s all you need to do. The user will be redirected to the login page first before accessing the dashboard. when the user login, the token should be stored in a cookie.

Using OWIN For Authentication
The website will work properly because we are using IIS. But in a scenario where we want to use OWIN, which is not dependent on the System.Web, we have to modify the JwtAuthHandler class and comment or remove the SendAsyn overridden method and create the owin Startup class. If you don't, you would get the "Authorization has been denied for this request" error message. So, the modification is displayed below:

Conclusion
We did not use the old forms authentication or identity. We only used JWT which is good when it comes to speed and performance and you can also use OWIN to run your web api application as a console app.

ReplyDeleteThough easily solved, the SignatureVerificationException is missing from the article and I assume that the error I'm getting regarding JsonWebToken is because I don't have the correct library that uses the JWT namespace.
